Route 66 in Missouri

From the Mississippi river and St. Louis all the way to Joplin, Route 66 traverses 317 miles through some of the road's most beautiful scenery. There are many historic landmarks and vintage architecture throughout Missouri so this is definitely a state you don't want to rush through. As is a predominant theme when traveling America's Main Street... it's all about the journey, not about the destination.

Missouri is nicknamed "The Show Me State" and for good reason. First stop once you are west of the Mississippi River is St. Louis home of the scenic Gateway Arch and more importantly, the world famous Route 66 institution that is Ted Drewes Frozen Custard shop. This is an absolute must stop as long as you don't mind waiting in line due to it's popularity. There are many other attractions, museums and historical things to see in the St. Louis area so take your time and enjoy this city.

Just west of St. Louis is St. Charles, Kirkwood and Times Beach with things to see and do in each. Eureka has a Six Flags Theme Park, a great place for the family to spend the day. Further west is St. Clair and Stanton, home of the Meramec Caverns where rumor has it that Jesse James hid out from the authorities looking for him. The caverns are arguably one of the highway's most well known attractions due to the marketing genius of it's owners who used barn roof logo advertising and bumper stickers in a way no business before them did.

Cuba is known as "the mural city" due to it's many wall paintings and is home to the famous Wagon Wheel Motel. "Hooker Cut" just east of Devil's Elbow was one of the highway's deepest rock cuts in the US leading up to crossing the Big Piney River. Heading into Lebanon you'll want to be sure to see the famous Munger Moss Motel and it's well known neon sign. There's also a great Route 66 Museum in Lebanon.

Further west is Phillipsburg, Springfield and Carthage. Carthage is home to the picturesque Jasper County Courthouse and the restored 1940's-era 66 Drive In Theater. Heading out of Missouri into Kansas you'll pass through Webb City and finally Joplin, home to the George Washington Carver National Monument.
