Route 66 in Oklahoma
Oklahoma boasts 432 miles of Route 66, almost 18% of the Chicago to Santa Monica journey second only to New Mexico. Known as the "Sooner State", Oklahoma is home to some of the most beautiful gently rolling countryside and has more driveable miles of Route 66 than any other state.
The idea of a highway system that would eventually become Route 66 originated in Oklahoma from a man named Cyrus Avery in the 20's. He believed that such a highway cutting through the center of his home state of Oklahoma would bring lots of travel related dollars from those making the trek to the west and he deliberately worked long and hard for it to be. The old Santa Fe trail went through Kansas and it would have made more sense for the route to actually pass farther north missing Oklahoma entirely but old Cyrus just wouldn't allow that to happen.
Since the Oklahoma interstate is a toll road, most local travel is done on old route 66. Because of this the road has been very well maintained and a pleasure to drive upon. There are a few classic & famous Route 66 icons in Oklahoma including the blue whale in Catoosa, the rock cafe in Stroud and the 1898 round barn in Arcadia. You'll also travel through the cities of Tulsa, the state capital of Oklahoma City and several smaller college towns.
This Oklahoma section of Route 66 boasts the hometowns of Mickey Mantle, Will Rogers and Garth Brooks. There are many historic bridges, lots of museums, native American territory a plenty, forts, ghost towns and miles & miles of original Portland concrete roadbed to drive on. Oklahoma is definitely a Route 66 state that you'll want to take your time traveling through and take advantage of everything the state has to offer.
