Route 66 in Texas
Texas is the largest state in the continental US but Route 66 only travels through 186 miles of it's Northern pan handle. But that said, there's A LOT to see & do and a lot of Route 66 history throughout those 186 miles.
You'll know you entered Texas when you come across the town of Shamrock, home of an annual St. Patrick's Day celebration that draws thousands. There's actually even a small peice of Ireland's famous Blarney stone on exhibit here. But the big attraction in Shamrock is the U Drop Inn, which is a beautiful, historic building in the art deco style of the 30's when it was built.
McClean Texas boasts perhaps the finest collection of barbed wire displayed anywhere in it's Devil's Rope Museum. Definitely a must see along with McClean's restored Phillips 66 gas station. Further west is Jericho, home of the Jericho Gap where cars would often get stuck in the mud and would need to be pulled out. Traveling on be sure to see the leaning water tower in Groom before driving into Amarillo.
Amarillo, the largest Texas town on Route 66, is the helium capitol of the world producing 90% of the world's supply. It is also the home to two must see Route 66 landmarks: Cadillac Ranch and the Big Texan Steak House. Cadillac Ranch is an art sculpture consisting of a row of actual Cadillacs half-buried nose-first in the ground and the Big Texan Steak House is infamous for providing a free 72-ounce steak for anyone who can consume it within 60 minutes.
Further west is the little town of Adrian, home of the Mid-Point Cafe. This tiny restaurant is famous for not only it's "ugly crust" pies but also for being the geographic Route 66 half-way point between Chicago, IL and Santa Monica, CA.
Heading out of Texas into New Mexico you go through Glenrio. Once a bustling, thriving town back in the 40's but now pretty much a ghost town of delapitated buildings.
